Supporting a Loved One Through Addiction: A Family Guide

    October 19, 20257 min read

    Understanding Your Role

Supporting a loved one through addiction is challenging. You want to help, but it's important to understand what helps and what hurts.

    Do's and Don'ts

    DO:

    • Educate yourself about addiction
    • Set clear, consistent boundaries
    • Encourage treatment
    • Attend family therapy
    • Join a support group (Al-Anon, Nar-Anon)
    • Take care of your own mental health
    • Practice patience and compassion

    DON'T:

    • Enable destructive behavior
    • Make excuses for them
    • Give them money
    • Ignore the problem
    • Blame yourself
    • Try to control their recovery

    How to Start the Conversation

Choose a time when your loved one is sober and you're both calm. Use "I" statements to express concern without judgment:

"I've noticed changes in your behavior, and I'm worried about you. I love you and want to help you get the support you need."

    When to Consider an Intervention

If your loved one refuses help despite serious consequences, a professionally-guided intervention might be necessary. Contact a certified interventionist for guidance.

    Taking Care of Yourself

Remember: You can't pour from an empty cup. Prioritize your own well-being through:

    • Therapy or counseling
    • Support groups
    • Self-care activities
    • Healthy boundaries
    • Time with supportive friends

    Resources for Families

    • National Family Support Network
    • Al-Anon/Nar-Anon meetings
    • SAMHSA National Helpline: 1-800-662-HELP
    • Local family therapy services
